10-28-2000 Guns in Rio -- from rockinrio.americaonline.com.br
Guns N' Roses is back. After seven years of exile, surrounded by rumors and
speculations, the third edition of Rock in Rio was able to bring together
Guns N'Roses, one the greatest rock bands of all times. Considered by the
musicians themselves as a mark in their career, Guns N'Roses played for a
packed Maracană in 1991, presenting a concert which, for many people, is considered
as the best of Rock in Rio 2. Axl Rose is preparing a concert exclusively
for ROCK IN RIO FOR A BETTER WORLD, with new and old songs. To Medina, Axl
Rose is like Howard Hughes, a billionaire who was holed up in a hotel room
for several years. "We were able to bring Axl Rose back to Rock in Rio because
of the two great mysteries we have: the city of Rio de Janeiro, which overwhelmed
the artist when he was here, and the biggest music festival in the world",
says Medina, excited with the new contract as he recalls the success of the
group's presentation in the second edition of the festival. On that occasion,
they were the greatest rock band in the planet, with over 20 million records
sold in just two released albuns, having scored hits like "Paradise City",
"Welcome to the Jungle", "Knockin' on Heaven's Door", "Sweet Child o'Mine",
"I Used to Love Her", among others, in hit parades all over the world. Axl
Rose and Slash were the two most idolized guys by youngsters throughout the
world, dragging crowds wherever they performed. Everything started in the
mid 1980s, when William Bailey, or W. Axl Rose, created the band in Los Angeles.
But it was only in 1987, with the release of their first album, "Appetite
for Destruction", and an invitation to open Rolling Stones' tour "Steel Wheels",
that they were thrusted into fame. The album reached the top of parades all
over the world. In 89, after touring nearly all 1988 round, they released
their first EP, adding up four acoustic tracks (Patience, Used to Love Her,
You're Crazy and One in a Million) to the album "GN'R Lies". Both albums together
sold over 20 million copies. In 1991 they released the two volumes of "Use
your Illusion", which alternate at the top of the Billboard parade, also scoring
several hits, among them "You Could Be Mine", theme of "Terminator 2", with
Arnold Schwarzenegger. In 1993 they released their last studio work together
, "The Spaghetti Incident?", a collection with covers of punk bands, like
Nazareth and Misfits. Since then the members have taken different roads, some
have gone solo and Axl remained recluse, making a few short appearances with
Guns N'Roses. The rumors about the band's comeback have increased this year,
with the release of the double album "Live Era '87-'93", with their live presentations
from 1987 to 1993, and with the recording of the track "Oh, My God", for the
soundtrack of the movie "End of Days". In this track Axl performs with keyboard
player Reed, bassist Tommy Stinson, from "Replacements", drum player Josh
Freese and guitarists Huge and Dave Navarro (ex Jane's Addiction and Red Hot
Chili Peppers). For everybody's surprise and the fans' delight, Guns N'Roses
great comeback has been announced, with Axl Rose back at total speed to set
the World Stage at Rock in Rio for a Better World on fire.
Guns N' Roses Joins 'Rock in Rio' -- from wall of sound
Guns N' Roses has reportedly signed on to appear at the "Rock in Rio for a Better World" festival, according to an item in Brazilian newspaper O Globo. It's been seven years since GN'R last played live; would that more of its aging Los Angeles hair-metal contemporaries would follow this brave example. Festival organizer Roberto Medina told O Globo that the negotiations to secure the band were the most intense yet in the course of putting together the 10-day event and claimed that the only reason the band consented was because the fabled Chinese Democracy album has been completed and is slated for a January release. The third Rock in Rio extravaganza takes place Jan. 12 through 21 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Artists confirmed for the festival to date include: Neil Young, the Dave Matthews Band, 'N Sync, Britney Spears, the Deftones, Beck, R.E.M., Sheryl Crow, the Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Silverchair, Iron Maiden, Queens of the Stone Age, Rob Halford, U.K. boy band 5ive, and James Taylor. Singer Axl Rose is the only remaining original member of GN'R, which also played at Rock in Rio 2 in 1991. Although the group released one song, "Oh My God," on the soundtrack to End of Days in November 1999, no other new material has surfaced since.
Guns N' Roses Set for Rock in Rio Comeback -- from Rolling Stone
Media reports trumpet GN'R performance at Rock in Rio Festival
in January After several teasing, halting baby steps over the last year, Axl
Rose may finally be ready to fully return to the public arena. Rose has reportedly
agreed to premiere the new lineup of Guns N' Roses at the Rock in Rio for
a Better World concert in January. Although a representative of Guns N' Roses
label, Interscope/Geffen Records, could not confirm the booking, and calls
to the band's booking agent Big FD Entertainment were not returned by press
time, the Brazilian newspaper O Globo reported that the group has been added
to the lineup of the festival, which runs Jan. 12-21 in Rio De Janerio, Brazil.
GN'R has not yet been added to the festival's official Web site, www.rockinrio.americaonline.com,
but festival organizer Roberto Medina told Brazilian television on Wednesday
that the deal was set, with the band scheduled to perform on Jan. 14. If GN'R
are confirmed for the festival, they'll be joining a bill that also features
recent new additions the Dave Matthews Band and 5ive as well as heavy weights
like R.E.M., Neil Young, Britney Spears, 'N Sync, Sheryl Crow, the Red Hot
Chili Peppers, Beck, the Foo Fighters, Iron Maiden, James Taylor and more.
It would mark Rose's second appearance at the festival, having performed at
Rock in Rio with GN'R in 1991. Keyboardist Dizzy Reed would be the only other
GN'R veteran of the festival, as the rest of the band now features former
Replacements bassist Tommy Stinson, guitarists Paul Tobias, Buckethead and
Robin Finck (having returned from his stint with Nine Inch Nails) and new
drummer Brain, formerly of Primus. Rock in Rio would also mark Guns N' Roses
first public performance in seven years, though Rose made a surprise appearance
at a Los Angeles club show by former bandmember Gilby Clarke in June. As of
Thursday morning, the Interscope representative had no news to report on the
status of Chinese Democracy, the GN'R album Rose has been working on for the
last five years, but O Globo reports that the group's decision to perform
at Rock in Rio ties into their desire to launch the album in January. There
was much talk about the album being finished in time for release this summer
(fueled by Rose coming out of hiding to talk about it with both Rolling Stone
and MTV), but it never materialized. The only new GN'R song the public has
heard in the last half decade was "Oh My God," an industrialized rocker featured
on the soundtrack to End of Days in 1999.
10-26-2000 Guns N' Roses To Play Rock In
Rio -- from MTV.com
It's been a long time coming, but the new Guns N' Roses is ready to rage in front of a live audience. Roberto Medina, head of the Rock in Rio festival, told Brazil's Globo television network on Wednesday (October 25) that reclusive GN'R frontman Axl Rose has agreed to play the massive South America event Rock in Rio 3 in January with his new lineup. A source close to the production confirmed the band's appearance is written in stone -- or at least as close as possible, given the no-show nature of the mercurial Rose. Backing up Rose, the only remaining original GN'R member, are the previously announced new members -- bassist Tommy Stinson, guitarist Paul Tobias (formerly known as Paul Huge), keyboardist Dizzy Reed and guitarist Buckethead, as well as the band's latest addition, former Primus drummer Brain, who has replaced Josh Freese, the source said. The source added that guitarist Robin Finck, who previously left the group to rejoin Nine Inch Nails, is also on board for the show. Calls to Guns N' Roses' record label, Interscope, were not returned as of press time. The band is scheduled to perform the closing set on January 14, the third day of the festival, which runs for seven days in two segments from January 12 to 21. Roughly 100 acts are expected to play the event, including Beck, R.E.M., Red Hot Chili Peppers, Silverchair, Iron Maiden, Britney Spears and Foo Fighters. GN'R has yet to turn up on the list of confirmed acts for Rock in Rio 3 that has been posted by organizers on the event's official Web site (at www.rockinrio.americaonline.com.br). However, the Rock in Rio camp did take to the site this week to announce that the Dave Matthews Band and Five have been added to the festival lineup. GN'R has been working on what appears to be a never-ending project, "Chinese Democracy," for the past five years, most recently with producer Roy Thomas Baker. The current status of the album is not known. Rose performed live for the first time in seven years when he sat in with former bandmate Gilby Clarke at an L.A.-area club in June.

Guns N' Roses Return To The Stage After Seven-Year Hiatus from CDNOW.com
Guns N' Roses have signed on to make their first live appearance in seven years at next year's Rock in Rio for a Better World, a 10-day Brazilian music festival in Rio de Janeiro from Jan. 12-21, 2001, according to Brazilian newspaper O Globo. The band -- which now consists of the reclusive singer Axl Rose, guitarists Paul Tobias and the returning Robin Finck (who left Nine Inch Nails once again for GNR), bassist Tommy Stinson, keyboardist Dizzy Reed, and ex-Primus drummer Brain -- is scheduled to close the festival on its first weekend, Jan. 12-14. O Globo also reported that the band agreed to the performance because it has finished its five-years-in-the-making Chinese Democracy album and will launch it in January, 2001. Those reports could not be confirmed at press time, however. Guns N' Roses join previously announced acts the Dave Matthews Band, 5ive, Neil Young, Sheryl Crow, Beck, R.E.M., the Deftones, Foo Fighters, 'NSync, Britney Spears, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Silverchair, Iron Maiden, James Taylor, Queens of the Stone Age, and Rob Halford on the international menu for the festival. Rock in Rio will take place in the Barra da Tijuca area of Rio. Tickets for the event will go on sale in October. Check out the event's Web site for more information on ticket sales. Guns N' Roses also played the second edition of the Rock in Rio festival in 1991. Axl Rose's last time on the stage -- sans GNR, though -- was when he showed up at a Gilby Clarke show in L.A. in June.
